Furness Abbey

June 2025

Professional work for the University of Liverpool

Over the course of Summer 2025, I was contracted by the University of Liverpool to help with modelling works for the Tracing The Past research project. The project was investigating the vaults of Furness Abbey, located in Barrow-in-Furness, and testing the capabilites of machine learning models in regard to analysing vaults. I was tasked with creating two models of the Chapter House within.

I produced a model showing the existing condition of the room, and a model showing a reconstruction of what the room would have looked like originally before deterioration. In addition, I produced still renders and gifs showing the before/after condition.

The work was performed in Rhino3D due to its powerful surface modelling capabilities. The basis of the work was a high-resolution pointcloud scan, from which the profiles of the vaulting and decorative stonework were taken. A high level of detail and accuracy was achieved.

The modelling was done based on a E57 pointcloud file weighting in at 1.5GB. The incredibly complex geometry of the vaults took many days and multiple attempts to get right, in particular producing a surface topology that is closed and doesn't leave holes.
